Snap is acquiring the wave optics startup

Snap acquires AR startup WaveOptics, which provides tech for Spectacles, for over $500M Ingrid Lunden @ingridlunden   /   2:30 PM GMT • May 21, 2021 Image Credits:   Snap Snap yesterday announced the   latest iteration of its Spectacles augmented reality glasses , and today the company revealed a bit more news: it is also acquiring the startup that supplied the technology that helps power them. The Snapchat parent is snapping up   WaveOptics , an AR startup that makes the waveguides and projectors used in AR glasses. These overlay virtual images on top of the views of the real world someone wearing the glasses can see, and Snap worked with WaveOptics to build its latest version of Spectacles. The deal was first reported by   The Verge , and a spokesperson for Snap directly confirmed the details to TechCrunch. Snap is paying over $500 million for the startup, in a cash-and-stock deal. The first half of that will be coming in the form of stock when the deal officially closes, and the rem

The future of e-commerce, Globally

Image
Ethan Choi is a partner at   Accel , where he invests in SaaS companies that are redefining workflow and collaboration, enterprise automation and e-commerce infrastructure. He also focuses on consumer internet companies and online marketplaces. In 2016, more   than 20 years after Amazon’s founding and 10 years since Shopify launched, it would have been easy to assume e-commerce penetration (the percentage of total retail spend where the goods were bought and sold online) would be over 50%. But what we found was shocking: The U.S. was only approximately 8% penetrated — only 8% for arguably the most advanced economy in the world! We’ve had a close eye on the rate of e-commerce penetration globally ever since. Despite e-commerce growth skyrocketing over the past year, the reality is the U.S. has still only reached an e-commerce penetration rate of around 17%. During the last 18 months, we’ve closed the gap to South Korea and China’s e-commerce penetration of more than 25%, but there is st

Why is Netflix woman in the window is one of the best streaming movies in this may

Image
Everyone knows by now that Netflix is an absolute beast when it comes to the sheer volume of entertainment it produces from one month to the next, keeping its tens of millions of subscribers busy enjoying tons of new TV and film content. To use   the month of May   as just one example, that new supply of content includes everything from Netflix original series like   Jupiter’s Legacy , the new Netflix original Korean drama   Move to Heaven   and   Love, Death & Robots: Volume 2   to such Netflix original films as   Army of the Dead , starring   Dave Bautista , and   The Woman in the Window   — the latter of which is actually among the top streaming movies across all of the major streaming platforms right now. That distinction comes via the   streaming search engine service Reelgood , which has the Amy Adams-led movie atop its rankings of the most-watched streaming movies for the week of May 12-18. But before you check the movie out, you should probably be aware of a few things firs

Why argued that edtech needs to think bigger in order to stay relevant after the pandemic

At the end   of 2020, I argued that   edtech needs to think bigger   in order to stay relevant after the pandemic. I urged founders to think less about how to bundle and unbundle lecture experience, and more about how to replace outdated systems and methods with new, tech-powered solutions. In other words, don’t simply put engaging content on a screen, but innovate on what that screen looks like, tracks and offers. A few months into 2021, the exit environment in edtech...feels like it’s doing exactly that. The same startups that hit billion and multi-billion valuations during the pandemic are scooping up new talent to broaden their service offerings. Ruben Harris , the founder of   Career Karma , a platform that matches aspiring coding professionals to bootcamps, put together a massive report recently with his team to talk about   the pandemic’s impact on the bootcamp market. James Gallagher, the author of   the report , tells me: It is important to note that the full potential of boot

The Wisconsin Democrat cited oft-reported stories of Amazon workers urinating in bottles

Amazon kicked off the holiday weekend by   backtracking slightly   on a social media offensive that unfolded in the waning days of a historic unionization vote. The earlier comments reportedly arrived as   Jeff Bezos was pushing   for a more aggressive strategy. Along with taking on Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, the Amazon News Twitter account went toe to toe with Congressman, Mark Pocan. The Wisconsin Democrat cited oft-reported stories of Amazon workers urinating in bottles in reaction to comments from Consumer CEO, Dave Clark. “You don’t really believe the peeing in bottles thing, do you?” the account asked. “If that were true, nobody would work for us. The truth is that we have over a million incredible employees around the world who are proud of what they do, and have great wages and health care from day one.” The Congressman’s initial response was pithy and to the point: “[Y]es, I do believe your workers. You don't?” Subsequent reports have served to cement th
